New Messaging App to Leverage Blockchain to Enhance User Data Privacy

In a world where companies make billions from collecting and selling user data, blockchain is providing a way for people to keep their communications private. Humanity is now more connected than it has ever been before. With the touch of a button, you can interact with anyone around the world instantaneously. But how secure are those communications?

There have been increasing data-privacy issues in recent years even as messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram have adopted security features, including peer-to-peer and encrypted communication. For instance, Facebook, which owns Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and many more, is said to have collected and sold user data to British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica without user consent in the 2010s.

WhatsApp was also fined nearly $220 million in 2018 by the Data Protection Commission (DPC) in the United Kingdom after the commission found that the messaging app had breached data privacy policies. Amid all these data-privacy concerns, software startup CryptoDATA has launched a blockchain-based messenger app called Wispr that leverages a security system called Voice Over Blockchain Protocol (VOBP) to increase user security.

CryptoDATA has partnered with Patentpool Group, a 20-year veteran in funding innovative start-ups, to launch the messaging app. Wispr uses cutting-edge encryption protocols such as AES-256 to prevent third parties from reading messages or listening to voice notes. In fact, the app’s encryption is so next level that even Wispr itself won’t be able to see your messages or hear your calls.

This is because VOBP generates private keys when users begin a conversation and exchanges those keys between the users. Messages from one user are encrypted with the keys and can only be decrypted by a user with these same keys. Even if someone were able to intercept the messages before they reached their destination, they would not be able to decipher them without the encryption keys. These keys are then destroyed at the end of every conversation.

Both Android and iOS users can download Wispr on the app store. Once the app is downloaded, it will turn the users’ mobile phone numbers into a code and issue them with a Matrix ID. This will essentially allow them to interact with other individuals while keeping their identities anonymous and prevent scammers from gaining access to backed-up conversations by hacking the second SIM card.

Patentpool Group CEO and founder Dr. Heiner Pollert says the company was attracted to Wispr because of its promise of absolute data security and the potential to introduce a functioning digital payment service in Europe. The range of investable ideas within the blockchain/crypto space is now spreading out beyond crypto mining alternatives such as Bit Mining Ltd. (NASDAQ: BTCM) to messaging apps and a lot more applications. It may not be long before this technology is entrenched in all aspects of modern life.
