The EU Could Use Blockchain Technology to Process Asylum Applications

Blockchain technology doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. Although the crypto market that catapulted blockchain into the mainstream is experiencing historically low prices, blockchain is currently riding high. Companies across several industries are considering integrating blockchain into their structure due to its decentralized nature, which offers increased security, privacy and traceability.

Now, it seems that blockchain could play a major role in humanitarian efforts in Europe in the wake of Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine. The Russia-Ukraine war has resulted in the largest influx of immigrants across the European Union. While the 2015 North Africa and the Middle East crisis displaced more than 1.3 million people in the EU and set records, the ongoing war in Ukraine has already displaced almost 5.3 million Ukrainian refugees into the EU.

This raises the problem of how the EU will catalog the millions of refugees who have and continue to enter the regioni through different border crossings. Thanks to its encrypted and decentralized nature, blockchain could be used in efforts to catalog migrants as they enter the bloc. As EU policymakers create legislations to deal with the migrant fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war, they must keep blockchain technology in mind.

Blockchain may have been first developed to facilitate cryptocurrency payments, but it has plenty of other applications as well. The technology’s decentralized and encrypted nature allows it to be incorporated into systems meant to address global-development challenges and digitize public services, just to name a few. It is also more secure than traditional networks compared to traditional databases because of its distributed and immutable structure, eliminating the need for intermediaries that guarantee stored data is safe.

Asylum application systems could also become more secure by incorporating blockchain into their systems. Through blockchain digital IDs that prevent identity theft and fraud, the EU would be able to accurately and safely identify each migrant who enters the bloc. Additionally, this network of blockchain IDs would be almost impossible to hack, and the decentralized ledger containing the IDs could be accessed anywhere worldwide.

The UN high commissioner has already gleaned the benefit of accurate tracking, turning to biometric data to track refugees as they flee their countries and head for greener pastures. The United Nations (UN) World Food Program also uses biometric registration data to transfer cash in a Jordanian refugee camp via a pilot blockchain program called Blockchain Against Hunger.

The interest shown in blockchain technology by major entities such as the EU and the UN just goes to show that if sector companies such as Stronghold Digital Mining Inc. (NASDAQ: SDIG) play their cards well, the world is theirs to conquer as the industry matures.
