Ethereum Aims to be Quantum-Ready by 2029

Ethereum’s development roadmap is placing greater emphasis on preparing the network for advances in quantum computing, with the Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol team targeting a fully post-quantum Layer 1 by the end of 2029.

The target was outlined in the Foundation’s September priorities update and discussed again during a Protocol AMA on September 16 on Reddit. The plan covers data-availability components, consensus, and execution. However, developers stressed that several technologies under discussion remain proposals rather than approved protocol changes.

The Foundation is treating the potential arrival of a cryptographically capable quantum computer by 2030 as a deliberately cautious planning scenario. It has acknowledged that many forecasts put such a development further into the future. The 2029 deadline is fixed for now, with a review involving external experts expected in January 2027.

One major challenge involves Ethereum accounts, which currently depend mostly on elliptic-curve cryptography. Future account designs need to allow users to change authentication methods without requiring a hard fork whenever cryptographic standards evolve.

Validator signatures present a separate challenge as they are more deeply embedded in consensus rules. Data availability also requires changes to ensure its cryptographic foundations meet post-quantum requirements.

The Foundation warned that upgrading Layer 1 alone will not protect the wider Ethereum ecosystem. Wallets, bridges, rollups, applications, and custody providers may continue using vulnerable cryptographic systems and will need their own migration plans.

Account abstraction is one area that could help. Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) is planned for the Hegotá update. The proposal separates authorization, execution, and fee payment, allowing accounts to define their validation logic. That could make it easier to adopt new signature systems without forcing Ethereum to standardize one post-quantum method for every account.

Frames would also support features such as key rotation, sponsored transaction fees, and grouped operations.

The proposal remains under development, while Hegotá itself is still being planned, with Ethereum.org indicating a tentative Q2 2027 timeframe.

Ethereum’s zero-knowledge roadmap is advancing in parallel. EIP-8025 would initially allow execution proofs to be generated and verified without making them mandatory for block validity. Developers could therefore test proving systems, client integration, and networking before requiring proofs across the network.

Longer term, Ethereum plans to move toward mandatory execution proofs, potentially allowing validators to verify compact proofs rather than rerun every transaction. The Foundation has said the sequence of these upgrades remains under review, since post-quantum changes to consensus could take priority.

Privacy is another major research area. FOCIL and Frames are expected to provide building blocks for privacy-preserving transactions while reducing dependence on centralized transaction inclusion mechanisms. A separate proposal for an embedded private transfer system was not selected for Hegotá, with developers favoring a more flexible approach based on existing programmable-account work.

Meanwhile, research into faster finality and shorter block intervals continues. Decoupled consensus is being considered for a later fork, while Quick Slots remains under evaluation rather than being included in Hegotá.

The Foundation is also examining Ethereum’s issuance model. EIP-8363, which would reduce validator issuance as the staking ratio rises, was not accepted into the Hegotá scope. Developers said the issue affects Ethereum’s security budget and all holders, meaning broader ecosystem discussion is expected before any decision.

The roadmap reflects the Foundation’s broader restructuring, which placed protocol delivery, post-quantum security, zkEVM research, and Layer 1 privacy under the Protocol group. Work on the 2029 objective is expected to span several future forks, with proposals required to pass specification, implementation, and testing stages before adoption.

Firms like MicroStrategy Inc. (NASDAQ: MSTR) will be wondering when Bitcoin will also be releasing a roadmap for making the system quantum-ready.
